Your choice of repair shop

California's Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights provides the right to select the shop for body damage covered by an insurer. The insurer's coverage terms still apply. The official guidance linked below explains the consumer rights associated with that choice.

The starting claim record

The claim number, insurer contact and existing estimate establish what has already been reviewed. Photos and earlier reports provide context for the vehicle inspection. An initial insurance estimate may not include damage that remains concealed at that stage.

Additional work and approvals

A supplement identifies added or revised repair operations. Customer authorization and the insurer's payment approval are separate decisions. Comparing dated estimates helps identify what changed and whether any amount remains outside the insurer's accepted payment.

Payment and collection

The deductible may not be the only customer expense. Uncovered work, payment arrangements and any remaining balance need to be established for the claim. Rental coverage has its own limits; an extended repair does not automatically extend that benefit.
